Gas Tank
From Ugly to Art
I call it art, its really just a gas tank. There is a large amount of space in the front of the car that's used to store the gas tank and battery. The brakes and electrical are also contained in this same area. The original design was efficient but ugly. The tank was only held in place by two very thin metal straps. I could see them breaking under a bit stress. The tank was very tall and did not allow access to anything behind it like the steering controls or brake system.
My goal was to take this space and make it something better than it was. I think it was an improvement.
Hidden Gems
I kept the same amount of usable space but hid it a bit. In the original setup there was space for a jack and the battery, everything was open. My current layout has a hidden compartment that contains a jack, an extra clutch cable, a belt, all the tools I would need to change all that out.
I also created a new strapping system that uses much stronger straps that are attached to the metal frame. This is done with a hidden sub-level below the tank that allows for me to quickly remove the tank and access the brake master cylinder (lesson learned. See BRAKES> ). This setup allows for more space in front, on top and behind the tank. The tank itself is 9 gallons and has a fuel sender attached to the original fuel gauge. The fuel enters the tank from the fuel inlet attachd to the radiator cap on the hood. Open the cap, pour in gas.
Here are some shots I took while making the base and creating the hidden strap mount. Enjoy!
Doors Within Doors
I wanted my hidden space. So after figuring out how the tank would mount in, I just had to sit it on top of this fake floor. I didn't want it to break or crush it so that's why I made the fortified base under it. The door on the right is my hidden compartment. You can see the four holes for the tank straps and the hole for the fuel inlet. You also see another door on the lower left. This door had a double hinge because there was not enough vertical room with the tank in to open the door 100%. I found that by installing the hinge in the middle it could fold back on itself first reducing its vertical height. This allowed me access to the hidden GPS locating device backup battery as well as the master cylinder.
Looking back, it was a mistake trying for this second door. The tank completely blocked it from front, when you tried to go in over the tank you could not reach anything. Just didnt work. I later removed this door and left the space open. It now works very well and I can access and change the master cylinder without removing this base. It also helped me install the razor wire and poison darts above the hidden GPS device. Some of this is not true. Some is... Ask yourself what I was using the hard drive in the upper left corner for... Mystery!!!
First fill in new tank through pop-open Bugatti radiator cap. This was before I re-did the electronics. What a mess!
